The Catholic Fellowship is a registered charity and was founded as a support group for families of children with special needs. It is a voluntary organization and was set up in the Diocese of Brentwood over forty years ago. Shortly afterwards local groups were formed, Wanstead and Woodford being one of them.
At the time there were few facilities for parents in the Woodford area and as the group grew in numbers and volunteers it was able to offer extra services. Today the services offered to members have expanded further and we know play a very important part in their lives.
We run family events such as a swimming evening at Leyton Lagoon, Discos at St Augustine’s in Barkingside and an annual BBQ at St Anne Line, South Woodford. Our Jesus Club prepares children for the sacraments and helps them maintain their faith. The Pub Group is for senior members and meets in local pubs on alternate Mondays. We offer 10 days of day care in the summer holidays at St Augustine’s Nursery School and hold our Christmas party and day care in the Becket Centre.
Special masses are planned four times a year at Our Lady of Lourdes, Wanstead, St Thomas of Canterbury, St Anne Line and Chigwell Convent. Fundraising events include quiz nights held at Trinity School. A long weekend holiday is organised every autumn half term and occasional pilgrimages to Lourdes. We also run trips to the theatre, sea side and rececently to the Millenium Wheel.
However, none of these events would be possible without the continued support of our committed volunteers and support of local parishes ans schools. We are very grateful to all those who help us and give up their time to provide what we know are valuable services to our members.
